Introduction |
| What are "Chat Sounds"? Chat Sounds is the term I have applied to sound and music files that are stored on your computer and triggered by your IRC chat program to lend more fun to the IRC chat experience. This is totally optional. If you do not wish to hear humorous sounds or enjoyable music emanating from your computer while you are trying to read or type during an IRC chat, then leave now and don't worry about it ever again. If, hoewever, you want to make your chat experience more fun for you and others, just follow the instructions below. |
What do I do next? Just follow the instructions below for help doing everything you need to do to take part in Chat Sounds. Everything from downloading the files to configuring "popups" in the mIRC software has been posted here to help you.
- How to download the files.
Note: Instructions for the mIRC program are for version 6. Other versions of mIRC might have different menus or locations for these commands and dialogs.
- How to make sure you can hear the sound requests.
- How to trigger a sound to the whole group.
- How to trigger a sound to a specific person.
- To configure your Pop-ups for the Nickname list.
- To configure your Pop-ups for the Channel window.

|
| On a PC: move the mouse onto the "File Name" of the sound or song you wish to download (or the zip archive of all the sounds or songs). Click the RIGHT mouse button. Choose "Save Link As..." or "Save Link Document As..." from the list that pops up. Locate your mIRC "Sounds" folder. By default, this is "C:\mirc\sounds\". Then, after you have found that folder, click the "Save" button. If you downloaded a single sound, you can play it after it has downloaded by double-clicking on that file within your Windows Explorer (or File Manager). If you downloaded a zip archive, you will need to unzip it first. If you have Winzip on your machine, you're all set. Just double-click on the zip file, and extract/unzip all the files into your mIRC sounds folder (same place as the zip file). If you do not have Winzip, you can download it from www.winzip.com. |
| On a Mac: move the mouse onto the "File Name" of the sound or song you wish to download (or the zip archive of all the sounds or songs). Click AND HOLD the mouse button. Choose "Save Link As..." or "Save Link Document As..." from the list that pops up. I think Macs can play WAV files, but I'm not sure about them opening ZIP files. If you are on a mac, and would like to help me help others with this, please let me know. Actually, I don't think any of the Mac IRC clients will respond to the mIRC sound requests anyway, so be sure and look into it before devoting a lot of time with instructions on unzipping ZIP files. |

With mIRC: follow these steps to ensure you will hear the sound requests:
- Make sure all the sound and song files you want to be able to hear are in the mIRC "Sounds" folder.
- If mIRC is not running, launch it.
- Click the "Tools" menu and choose "Options..."
- Click the expand icon (the + sign) next to the "Sounds" item in the category menu at the left side of the mIRC Options window. This will show the "Requests" and "Agents" categories.
- Click the "Requests" item in the category menu.
- Make sure there is a check in the box labeled "Accept sound requests"
- The "On Sound Request" section is self-explanatory and generally unimportant at this time. Make your own choices or leave as-is.
- Make sure BOTH the "Listen for..." and "Send..." boxes are CHECKED.
- Make sure the "Wave files folder:" and "Midi files folder:" show the correct folder. If you stored the files in a different location than shown, click the button that has the current location as its label, locate the correct folder that has the files, and click "OK".
- Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the mIRC Options window.
- Have fun!

With mIRC: once you have connected to an IRC server and a channel to chat on, you can use the following command to trigger a sound event:
/sound wavfile.wav
Where "wavfile.wav" is the actual filename of the wav file you wish to play. You can also play MIDI music files this way. Be sure to use the exact filename that you want to play (MIDI files usually end in .mid) or it won't work. If the other people on the channel have the file, and are configured to play sound requests, they will hear the sound.
You can also configure Popups as below.

|
With mIRC: once you have connected to an IRC server and a channel to chat on, you can use the following command to trigger a sound event to a specific user:
/sound nickname wavfile.wav
Where "nickname" is the exact nickname of the person you wish to hear the sound, and "wavfile.wav" is the actual filename of the wav file you wish to play. You can also play MIDI music files this way. Be sure to use the exact filename that you want to play (MIDI files usually end in .mid) or it won't work. Also, if you do not specify a nickname, then the whole group will get the sound request. If you specify an incorrect nickname, you will hear the sound, but no one else will, since the nickname you entered was incorrect. If the person has the file, and is configured to play sound requests, they will hear the sound.
You can also configure Popups as below.

How to configure "Pop-Ups". |
| With mIRC: If you want to be able to trigger sounds and other things using the mouse instead of typing them in manually, you can use "Pop-Ups" within the mIRC software. The following explains how to get to the popup tools window, and gives the actual text you can copy and paste into the section you want. If you want to learn how to make your own popups and things, you should sit down for a couple hours, and study the extensive Help files the mIRC program has to offer. |
| To configure your Pop-ups for the Nickname list, allowing you to send a sound request to a specific user by right-clicking on his/her nickname, and choosing the sound you wish to send: |
- If mIRC is not running, launch it.
- Click the "Tools" menu and choose "Scripts Editor..."
- Click the "Popups" tab at the top
- Click the "view" menu and choose "Nick List"
- Use the scrollbar to scroll down to the bottom of the text in the window
- Place the cursor on the bottom line. If the bottom line is the end of a line of text, hit enter to start a new line.
- Copy ALL the text from the next step (directly below, starting with a period)
