Doh! I mean, it’s SNOW fun! 🙂 Grandpa Gaub got a couple rooms at the Silver Ridge Ranch lodge in Easton for a couple nights last week so that we could enjoy the snow that we’re unlikely to get in our area. But as they say, getting there was half the fun… As long as you understand that by “fun” I actually meant “hell.”
It’s funny… life and kids… Shortly after his birthday this year, Nikolas was very interested in getting some Heelys. We shopped around and found that they ran about $60+ per pair. Nikolas decided that while he wanted them, he wasn’t sure he wanted to spend his ENTIRE birthday haul on one thing like that. So, the urge subsided, he spent his money on other things, and the interest itself waned over time. Alex admitted that Heelys were kind of cool, but wasn’t really interested in getting any at that time.
Alex has been having a hard time with band class this year. When he started band, it was because of a very smart, fun, energetic teacher who obviously enjoyed what she was doing, and knew how to teach a group of kids to enjoy learning their new instruments. She was friendly and approachable by kids and parents alike. Unfortunately, last year, she spent more time training to be a principal than teaching music. That’s where her career was leading, and so that’s how it was. Although Alex had substitutes a good 50% of the time, or more, he still enjoyed music/band.
I am tremendously fortunate to be in the position I am in. I have a loving wife who has a proper career that is able to support my wonderful family. This has allowed me to be a Stay At Home Dad for the last 12+ years. I’ve been able to work, more or less, when I want to and in positions that allow me to continue being at home for our kids. Well, all things come to an end. Some sooner than others, and sometimes sooner than you wanted them to. Such is the case for the company known as FlashTalk Communications, LLC. After over 4 years with the company, my job will cease to exist when the company does, possibly sooner if the company officially exists much into December.
*sigh*
We knew it might happen when we signed Nikolas up for Soccer earlier this summer. Apparently the people in this town, maybe people in general, are of a “let someone else do it” life philosophy. It happened once before when Alex was in the same soccer league (Boys grade 2-3 with Parks and Rec). “What” is that there wasn’t a volunteer coach, and no parents of the team would volunteer either. Knowing this might/would happen in advance, I gave Ingrid permission to volunteer me if, and only if, it was obvious that no one else would step up. It had to be a last resort, ‘cus I already had Laser Tag games scheduled on alternate Saturdays through November, and Soccer games are always late mornings to early afternoons on Saturdays. Working hard all year on his Saxophone skillz, Alex showed his stuff last night along with the other kids in his 6th and 7th Grade Intermediate Band class. I digicammed the part he was in and uploaded it to YouTube for family to enjoy. Click the more for the embedded video. Read the rest of this entry »
While Alex was on his camping trip with Grandpa and Josh this weekend, his most recent report card came in the mail. Turns out, he got straight “A”s! Ok, well, a couple were A-, but still. He’s been working so hard lately and we’ve been riding him so hard about getting his homework done, doing any available extra credit, and overall putting in the effort and doing the work we know he is capable of, that we both felt the need to reward him for his grades. The question is, how? Read the rest of this entry »
With all this talk of the barriers I’m working on, I haven’t posted a single picture of my own. Well, I’m finally done making them all, and have already put them to good use. First, I set most of them up in the back yard so that Nikolas and his friends could play some laser tag as a b-day party activity. Then, I put some out at my ALTC game last Saturday for a couple Zone games. Read the rest of this entry »
