SeaPUG Meeting, September 19, 2000

This was our third monthly meeting. 19 people attended this month... at least, that's how many people signed the guestbook. ;-) We had new members join us, as well as several regularly attending members.

Again, Greg Martz set up the meeting room early. The meeting room had recently been upgraded with a better presentation workstation, now including desktop and mobile microhphones so that we can hear better. This also makes the audio on my video recording much clearer, although it's not quite there. I might see if there's a way to hook the camera to the sound system in some way. If that ever happens, then a downloadable or streaming video of meeting highlights might be possible.

Introduction:
This time, Greg Martz did the introductions. We skipped the old business this month and discussed a different meeting time for October. Greg Martz, who works at Attachmate and is the person who got us the great meeting room, is going to be out of town during the week of the thrid Tuesday next month. We discussed the situation and ultimately decided to try the fourth Tuesday of October. If that turns out to be a good day to have the meeting on, we might meet on the 4th Tuesday regularly. Then again, if it's a less favorable day, we'll switch back. As you can see on the Where and When page, the October meeting is on the 24th. There was also some minor discussion on information for the web site. If anyone has information they'd like to share or discuss with the group, just send it to the webmaster, or the egroups mailing list. If necessary, a new page can be created on the web site.
Presentation: Town Compass
We had a great presentation of some great new software from Town Compass. Their Pocket Directory is now available on the PalmOS! Their first databases include Seattle and UofW, and have over 5,000 and 3,000 entries respectively (with some overlap). Their application, the "engine" so to speak, is able to access the database in several useful ways, from hierarchal lists to subject lists to straight-on categories. Finding the information you need for anything in the Seattle area is a mere 3 taps away. You can also copy the information from an entry so that you can paste it into other applications, as well as beam an entry to a friend's device into their Memo Pad file. They are also looking into ways to allow user updates and new entries, conduit updates to the database for new and updated information, and a lot more! If you wanted a yellow pages in your Palm, this is it! They strongly encourage any and all feedback, as well as distribution of their application and databases. Registration gets you free updates to the databases as they come out and information on new and upcoming features. Be sure to visit their site and download their software, send them your feedback, and share it with your friends!
Giveaways:
We gave away some great stuff this month: 3 brightly colored Stinger Styli, a Neoprene soft case from Palm-Tec, and Town Compass passed out t-shirts and pocket travel directories to everyone!
Open Discussion:
After the giveaways, we had plenty of time to meet and greet and talk to other members. Many members talked with the guys from Town Compass for a little while longer, while others "talked shop" with each other.
Great Meeting!
